
Ikea furniture made of particle board or MDF emits a characteristic odor upon unpacking. This odor mainly comes from the resins and glues used to bond the wood fibers, which release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the ambient air. The question of how long it takes to air out Ikea furniture is not a simple number: it depends on the type of panel, the ventilation of the room, and the ambient temperature.
Formaldehyde and engineered wood panels: what the regulations require in 2026
The main VOC involved in particle board or MDF furniture is formaldehyde, a gas classified as a carcinogen. Until recently, the European E1 standard set the emission limit at 0.124 mg/m³ in a test chamber. This threshold will be halved.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 has listed formaldehyde under entry 77 of Annex XVII of REACH, with a reduced limit of 0.062 mg/m³ applicable from August 6, 2026. Panel furniture sold in the European Union will have to comply with this ceiling, which will significantly change the amount of gas emitted by new furniture.
According to data provided by Ikea, the brand has already reduced formaldehyde emissions from its panels (particle board, MDF, plywood) by 50 to 65% compared to the E1 standard between 2007 and 2016, by using formaldehyde-free or low-formaldehyde glues. Ikea products would, according to these same statements, be several times below the future European limits.

Several factors modify the actual duration of airing:
- The room temperature: heat accelerates off-gassing, but without ventilation, vapors stagnate and the odor lingers longer. A piece of furniture assembled in winter in a heated and closed room will take longer to lose its odor than a piece installed in a ventilated garage in spring.
- The volume and surface area of the furniture: a large PAX wardrobe with many internal panels emits more than a small LACK side table. The larger the exposed panel surface, the longer the off-gassing.
- The type of finish: a melamine or laminated panel partially traps emissions, which slows initial off-gassing but may prolong the release of VOCs over several weeks at low doses.
- Ventilation: a cross breeze (two opposite windows open) is significantly more effective than a single ajar window.
The first 72 hours concentrate the majority of emissions, but a residual odor may persist for one to three weeks on larger furniture or in poorly ventilated rooms. Field reports vary on this point: some users report disappearance within a few days, while others take several weeks for the same model.
Ikea furniture in a closed room: precautions not to be overlooked
The stakes are different depending on the use. A KALLAX sideboard in a well-ventilated 30 m² living room raises fewer concerns than a MALM dresser installed in a 9 m² bedroom where one sleeps with the window closed.
In a bedroom, the concentration of VOCs can rise during the night since the room remains closed for several hours. During the initial off-gassing phase, sleeping in another room or keeping the window open is the most effective precaution.
For children’s rooms, caution is heightened. Young children breathe a proportionally higher volume of air relative to their body weight, which increases their relative exposure to VOCs. Assembling the furniture in a separate room (garage, unoccupied room) and waiting at least until the end of the initial peak before placing it in the bedroom reduces this exposure.

Speeding up the off-gassing of new furniture: methods that work and limitations
Completely unpacking the furniture (removing all plastic films, inner cartons, bags) is the first step. As long as the panels remain wrapped, off-gassing does not actually begin.
Opening doors, drawers, and flaps of the furniture allows exposure of the interior surfaces, which are often less well-finished and therefore more emissive. Placing a fan facing the furniture accelerates the air renewal around the panels.
Baking soda absorbs some of the residual odors: placed in bowls inside the closed furniture for 24 hours, it captures the odor-causing molecules on the surface. Activated charcoal works on the same principle, with a broader adsorption capacity.
These methods reduce the perceived odor, but they do not eliminate the emissions of formaldehyde themselves. Only time, combined with good ventilation, effectively reduces the amount of VOCs released by the panel. If these statements are confirmed in independent tests accompanying the regulation’s entry into force, the gap between an Ikea piece of furniture and the regulatory limit will be significant. However, the actual reduction in the necessary airing time will depend on the exact formulation of the glues used, which may vary by product lines and manufacturing plants.
